Located just 1 degrees north of the equator in the Hinako islands as well as a stones throw from the island of Nias, Sozinho's Surf Lodge directly overlooks one of Sumatra's best left hander's "Asu".
The main focus of the surf camp is Asu, a truly mechanical wave that is consistent from April to October, works on all tides and holds big swells with ease. Another 6-7 waves are found within 45-60 minutes from the resort, that can be reached by speedboat.
Guests can arrive/depart any day as there are connecting daily flights to Gunung Sitoli (Nias) from Medan, Padang and Jakarta.
Be sure to check out our blog article about what you can expect: The Real Guide to Surfing the Hinako Islands

When Asu is not breaking or is onshore, guests will be taken (with the help of a surf guide / driver) to explore one of the other 6-7 waves in the region.
There is also a limit of just 4 surfers per boat to maximise speed & comfort when traveling to other waves and to keep crowds at an absolute minimum.

Trip Information
The camp directly overlooks the left hander "Asu" as well as being around 45 mins to 1 hour by speedboat from the rest of the regions waves.
Getting in and out is via the key hole in front of the camp & requires some timing. Experienced surfers will be fine with bare feet, but less experienced surfers would require reef boots to offer some protection when walking on the sharp reef.
The key hole, pictured above, offers convenient access in and out of the wave.

Guests need to fly into Medan Airport (KNO) - Kuala Namu International Airport West Sumatra
We recommend using https://www.skyscanner.net/ and flying into Jakarta, Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (CGK) or Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). From KL, there is usually one morning flight (1hr) with Air Asia as well as a lunchtime flight to Medan. From Jakarta, there are plenty of flights each day that fly into Medan, with airlines such as Garuda Airlines, Sriwijaya, Citilink & Lion Air. We recommend https://www.nusatrip.com
From Medan, you will need to take an extra flight to Gunung Sitoli, Binaka Airport (GNS) we recommend Wings Air (part of Lion Air). There are a number of flights each day.
Note: Many of the air craft are small and have limited capacity to take surf boards. From our experience WINGS seems to have the best success rate with the majority of board bags making it across each flight. Worst case scenario your board bag will make it across the next day (although unlikely that this will happen).
From Gunung Sitoli, you'll be collected & driven across Nias Island (2 hours of beautiful tropical scenery) to Sirombu Harbour. From here, a private speedboat will take you to Asu Island in about 30 minutes.
Note: The speedboat ride is always complimentary & the taxi ride is IDR 800,000 for a group of up to 4 guests (about USD 55 / AUD 80 shared between the group).
It’s a long but stress free journey and because there’s so many flights each day, you’ve plenty of travel options to suit your needs.
Note: Visa On Arrival: A FREE 30 day Visa On Arrival is now available for a number of countries including: Australia, USA, Brazil, South Africa, New Zealand, Canada, Peru, Costa Rica, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Ireland, England, France, Switzerland, Sweden and Germany.
Make sure you to pack light & within the baggage restrictions of your airline.
Don’t leave for your trip without any of the following:
Passport valid for at least 6 months from date of departure and must have at least 1 completely blank page (no stamps, nothing)
Tickets & itinerary
Travel insurance policy
Cash – change $500 minimum per two weeks stay into Indonesian Rupiah (IDR).
