Resort Boats

speeboat telos

Any surf experience in the Telo islands will depend massively on the daily speedboats on hand. Although there are plenty of waves, you can always expect to spend a good portion of the day chasing the waves as conditions change throughout the day.

The boats speed will naturally determine the amount of time you have to spend on the boat (and ultimately the amount of time you surf), while the boats comfort level will reflect on your experience before and after each session. To put it another way, slow boats suck & pimped out, fast boats are everything - especially in the Telo's. Swells and winds constantly change from dawn til dusk and having a fast fleet at your disposal combined with experienced surf guides will make all the difference. It also helps that the resort is centrally located in the region.

Guests will have 3 speedboats on hand. Designed in Australia & constructed by a New Zealand tradesman in Jakarta, the boats are fast, comfortable & reliable. They're also equipped with all the safety gear you'd expect.

Sifika Gaya

Trip Information

What to expect

surf telos
There's plenty of playful and forgiving waves in the Telos

Those lucky enough to visit this remote corner of Sumatra will not be disappointed. Waves in this region of the Telo islands are suited to both intermediate and advanced surfers, and as a whole, lack the ferocity and fear factor that you'll often find further south in the Mentawai Islands. That's not to say there aren't heavy and hollow waves in the region. It's more that there are *also* plenty of fun and forgiving set-ups - of which the Mentawai islands generally lack.

surfing sumatra telo
There's also a number of world class tubes for the more experienced guests

Another huge bonus is that there are relatively very few crowds as well as a "surf etiquette" which seems to regulate the numbers in the line-up. You'll experience far more consideration for other guests than that of the Mentawais.

Telo's 101 is a place suited for just about any surfer of any age with the majority of visitors being a little older & mostly Australian. The vibe, as expected, is super relaxed with the whole staff being extremely warm and welcoming, which is also reflected in the line-ups too. Its also the perfect surf resort to bring your family & non surfing partners where you can truly enjoy a guilt free surf trip!

The Surf

With around 30 waves on offer throughout the entire Telo Surf region, there's plenty of variety with a good mix of left, rights, soft waves and heavy tubes. All genuinely uncrowded. Being centrally located in the archipelago as well as having 2 of the regions best and fastest boats ultimately means that it's not too difficult to find pumping waves for just about anyone's ability.

The north and south regions work nearly opposite to each other with regards to preferential wind directions. The surf guides have extensive knowledge in both and are guaranteed to head where they know it will be on, be it in the north or south, ensuring you get the best that the day has to offer.

Pinnacles is a super fun right, less than 15 minutes from Telos 101

There's also some World class options even for the most advanced tube hungry surfers

Detailed information for all the surf breaks can be found in the destination's section of the site within the Telo Islands pages.

Travelling to Telos 101

travel to telo
Guests have 3 ways of reaching Telos 101.

Important: Please double check with us before booking any flights!

1) MEDAN (the most popular choice for guests)

Via Medan (KNO), guests have 1 option to reach Telos 101;

For this option, guests are required to make your way to Medan Kualanamu International Airport (KNO). From Medan you need to catch a domestic flight to Gunung Sitoli in Nias (GNS) airport. GARUDA and Lion Air/Wings Air are the major carriers with Garuda by far the most reliable and hassle free. The flight only takes about 50 mins.

Upon arrival at Nias you will be met by Telos 101 representatives and driven from the airport to the Fast Ferry harbour situated in Teluk Dalam. The land transfer takes around 2 hrs 30 mins.

FAST FERRY TELUK DALAM (Nias) - TELOS (1 hour 30 mins) - Free of Charge (runs 3 times per week)

Monday, Tuesday & Saturday
Teluk Dalam, Nias (15:00) - Telo (16:30)
Telo (08:00am) - Teluk Dalam, Nias (10:00am)

The Fast Ferry runs "three" times per week from Nias to Telos (return) and the trip takes approximately 1 hour & 30 mins. The ferry is the same ferry that runs between PADANG and Telos.

Compared to traveling via Padang, guests ultimately have to take an extra 50 minute flight as well as a taxi ride, but the fact that the fast ferry operates three times a week allows you much more flexibility/reliability with your transfer dates. The drive across Nias is quite enjoyable with scenic views along the way. Its also worth noting that guests can easily stay 1 or 2 nights in Lagundri Bay, which is home to a world class right hander that has graced endless surf magazine covers. Lagundri Bay is just 15 mins away from the fast ferry terminal in Teluk Dalam.

After your short fast ferry journey from Nias to Telos, upon arrival into the Telos, you will be met straight off the ferry by Telos 101 ground staff and transported by speed boat for the 15 min boat ride to the resort.

2) PADANG

Via Padang (PDG), guests have 2 options to reach Telos 101;

Running "once" per week, the Fast ferry from Padang to Telo Islands (and back) has certainly been a game changer. These vessels are new, extremely fast for their size and very comfortable by Western standards. For those familiar with the Sydney/Manly fast ferry, the Telos fast ferry is comparable. Air conditioned, single decked and capable of cruising at 26 knots, the trip to the South Telos takes approximately 5-7 hours.
Basic snacks and drinks are available. Telos 101 ground crew in Padang can also organise western food to take with you for this trip should you require.

FAST FERRY PADANG - TELO'S (5-7 hours) - Free of Charge (once per week)

Friday: Padang (08:00am) - North Telo (15:00)
Wednesday: North Telo (08:00am) - Padang (15:00) includes 1hr stop in Hibala South Telo

If surf conditions are favorable in the Southern Telo's, you will be met in the Southern port by Telo's 101 ground staff around 1pm and will be taken for a surf in this region before arriving at the resort later in the day. If surf conditions are not favorable, you'll arrive into the Northern Telo region around 15:00 where you'll be collected by speedboat & taken to the resort (15 min speedboat ride).

PRIVATE CHARTER FLIGHT PADANG - TELO'S (50 mins) - the most reliable and most efficient

SUSI Air offer Telos 101 guests the opportunity to fly direct out to the Telos islands from PADANG airport on a 12 seat Cessna Grand Caravan. The flight takes approximately 50 mins and is certainly a very scenic one taking in all of the Telos archipelago from the air including some very beautiful atolls. Factoring board bags, the maximum number of guests permitted per private charter is 9.

7 guests are required to make a charter flight reservation (maximum of 9)
7 guests: AUD 1,500 pp (AUD 750 each way).
9 guests: AUD 1,200 pp (AUD 600 each way)

speeboat telos

They're also equipped with all the safety gear you'd expect.

Detailed information for all the surf breaks can be found in the destination's section of the site within the Telo Islands pages.

travel to telo
Guests have 3 ways of reaching Telos 101.

Important: Please double check with us before booking any flights!

1) MEDAN (the most popular choice for guests)

Via Medan (KNO), guests have 1 option to reach Telos 101;

2) PADANG

Via Padang (PDG), guests have 2 options to reach Telos 101;
