Macaronis Resort can sleep 32 guests (max 20 surfers) within its 16 (twin or queen bed) private suites. All suites are located on the second-floor, come complete with a veranda with ocean, lagoon, and pool views. Rooms are a/c cooled and completely noise proof.

The Bar & Restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating (by the pool). A live feed of Macaronis lights up the big screen until dark. After dinner, guests can watch surf DVDs or the day’s footage. The bar area has excellent sound proofing so any night owls can enjoy a few late night beers without disturbing anyone sleeping upstairs.

Restaurant

Macaronis ground floor restaurant is a wonderful place to enjoy a meal and reflect on the day’s activities. Western and Indonesian cuisine is served each day including pastas, salads, roast chicken, beef rendang, and nasi campur. Our breakfast options include: bacon, eggs, fresh bread, pancakes, omelettes, porridge, fruit and Indonesian classics. Desserts are served after lunch and dinner and include cookies, cakes, fruit, muffins and many more! A twice weekly outdoor BBQ is served up every trip. Chefs can accommodate any food allergies or eating preferences. Supplies arrive at the resort only twice per week, but we are always well stocked and plan ahead.

Gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian guests are carefully accommodated to.

The Bar

A large flat screen TV usually plays a live feed of the surf until night closes in. After dinner most guests will choose to watch a DVD or the days surf footage whilst enjoying a few cold Bintangs. As with any decent bar - there’s also a pool table and ping pong table too! The bar serves a variety of cocktails, wines, liquor, beer, espresso and snacks. Bar Menu items are not included in your package rates and can be paid for at the end of your trip with Visa, Mastercard, or in cash with Indonesian Rupiah.

Daily yoga classes are available throughout the year at Macaronis Resort. Each session is usually around 1 hour long and will typically consist of a Vinyasa flow class. All abilities are welcome and there are no set schedules although usually morning and evening sessions are the preferred times.

1 yoga class: IDR 100,000 (approx. AUD 10 / USD 7 / class)

Guests are always free to use the resorts yoga mats free of charge, if they'd prefer not to take a lesson.

Macaronis Resort is proud to be one of the only resorts in the Mentawai Islands that offer surf lessons for beginners. Much of the regions coast is fringed with sharp coral reef that’s less than ideal to learn on. However Macaronis Resort is blessed with its own sand bottomed wave that’s perfect for any beginner.

Located just a stone’s throw from the resort, Fish Fingers is Macaronis Resorts very own beginner wave. Breaking over a soft sandy bottom, this wave offers small rolling peaks, ideal for those new to the sport. And don’t forget, all learner surf boards are available to our guests free of charge.

Am I a Beginner Surfer?

If you know how to surf or plan to bring your own equipment then you’re not considered a beginner surfer. Beginners can only surf “Fish Fingers” and must only use soft-top surfboards. Beginners are only allowed to surf other waves when taking an intermediate lesson with a hired surf board. The opportunity to advance to a more challenging wave is at the discretion of our surf instructors, for your safety.

Mini Macas or Silabu Left

Beginners  taking an Intermediate & Advanced Surf Lesson (and paying for board rental) may surf at Mini Macas or Silabu Left if the instructor agrees the surfer is ready.

Pricing for Intermediate Surf Lesson:

RP 300,000/hour (approx $30/hr)
+ RP 100,000 Board Rental (approx $10/hr)

Macaronis Wave

Surfers booked on the “Beginner Package” can no longer get advanced lessons at the Macaronis wave, or surf at Macaronis at all. The only way they can surf Macaronis now is to pay to upgrade to a full “Surfer” for the rest of their trip, and also pay the Mentawai Surfer Tax. Also this is only possible if we are not yet at 20 surfers during their trip. (We changed this because of the new law and the introduction of the Surf Tax).

If a Beginner Surfer is coming on a long-ish trip and they think that they may get to Macaronis by the end of their stay, I recommend that they actually book part of their trip as a "Surfer". If they want to upgrade on-site, especially during peak season, it might not work out for them as there may not be any "Surfer" spots left by that stage.

Macaronis Resort is one of the only resorts to stock a quality and comprehensive quiver of surfboards. And not only that – they’re all “Firewire” – one of the best brands available on the market. There are around 14 models with varying shapes and sizes available.

All surfboard rentals include fins and a leash.

Payment is accepted in Indonesia Rupiah only. Resort guests may add treatments to their tab to be paid at the end of their trip with Visa or Mastercard.

Freelance surf photographers offer guests a video and photo service year-round. They shoot from the boat, from the viewing platform and some of them from the water. The photographers will do their very best to get you on the best wave of your life! You may purchase photos or get a video of your trip to take home with you. See pricing below.

On arrival at the resort, you'll soon realise that the hype is real! And after cruising past the wave on your way to the resort, as soon as the group has been debriefed, you'll be free to surf!

Guests can surf anytime, all day, dawn to dusk at Macaronis. The main wave is by far the best and most consistent wave in the area. In fact its probably the best and most consistent wave in all of Sumatra. The focus is very much on the left hander & is the reason you should visit. Once you've surfed this wave you'll appreciate why you traveled all this way. It will become your favorite wave no matter what your level. And whats more is that the resort keeps the status quo in the line-up. Everyone takes their turn. Visiting charters respect those staying at the camp and everyone gets their waves. Its a great system. 

Whats more is that you can surf this wave all day long as you can request a ride out to the line-up anytime. And this wave is so consistent that it even handles an onshore wind like no other wave. Of course it breaks on all tides too! 

Although the focus of the resort is obviously on Macaronis left (and Macaronis "Right" - if you want to surf it), guests will also have the option to head over to Green Bush whenever the tide and swell allows (15 mins away). If the swell is big enough, then Mini Macas will also be breaking in the bay and there is always Fish Fingers for the beginners.

Furthermore, the resort will typically make 2 trips per week to the regions other waves. These include Green Bush, Roxies, Thunders, Silabu left, Rags right, Rags left, Rednuht & Bat Cave.

The "Off Season" (November to March)

Expect extreme consistency in the main season (April-October) but it also remains as a great option in the "off season" too. If you're looking to surf shoulder to head high surf (sometimes bigger) without the high season crowds then a trip between November and March is a must! Most surfers will be surprised just how much fun this wave is during this time of year (check the video above). It tends to be the perfect time for Euro surfers or those simply looking for super fun crowd free surf sessions. On average, during a 7 day trip, expect shoulder to head high waves on 4-5 days, 1-2 smaller chest high days and even 1-2 bigger days. Weather is often glassy around this time too.

Guests need to fly into Padang Airport, West Sumatra 

We recommend using https://www.skyscanner.net/ and flying into either Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - or Jakarta, Indonesia.  From KL, there is usually one morning flight (1hr) with Air Asia  as well as a lunchtime flight to Padang.  From Jakarta, there are over a dozen flights each day that fly into Padang, from airlines such as Garuda Airlines, Srwijaya, Citilink  & Lion Air. Padang Airport to Macaronis Resort

Macaronis Resort offers easy and comfortable return transfers from Padang airport to the resort and back to Padang airport. Guests only need to arrange their flights in & out of Padang (PDG). We'll take of the rest!

When planning a trip in advance, your flight needs to be scheduled to arrive into Padang on Thursday and depart Saturday (arrive/depart anytime).

Mentawai Fast Ferry in detail:

Mentawai Fast transfers operate every Friday  

In summary and includes:

* Padang airport pick-up (arrive PDG on Thursday)
* 1 night at hotel (recommend Mercure or Oxville, not included in the price)
* Taxi to Padang port (5:45am). Fast Ferry departs 6:30am (all porters and luggage handling included)
* Arrive 11.00 am, to Sikakap, Mentawai (Friday)
* Speedboat Transfer to the resort (1hr-1hr 30 mins, arriving resort 12:30pm)

On return

Check out time is at 10:00am. The speedboat will depart the resort at around noon to the fast ferry in Sikakap. The ferry departs Sikakap at 2:30pm for its return to Padang arriving around 6:30pm. Guests will be taken to their hotel. The next morning guests will be taken to the airport.

NOT INCLUDED: Hotel in Padang; meals and personal expenses in Padang.
