Kick Ass Asu!

By Pete Bates, 6th April 2016

One of the best places that I've been in this world, good food and good people. Big thanks to Marcelo who took care of us like a brother.

Great camp for surfing and diving. Marcelo the manager was a great host too. Food was top notch for such an isolated location. Excellent waves and some varied options, certainly would recommend a trip to Puri Asu.

Remote but great!

Thanks to the crew for an epic trip. Asu is a truly great wave and is well worth the mission. The camp is fantastic and the food very good too. If you want uncrowded waves then look no further. Thanks guys, Baz

Located 1 degrees north of the equator on the Hinako islands, Puri Asu is a real surfer’s haven with a number of truly epic wave’s just minutes from this tropical paradise.

The island of Asu, is one of 8 islands found off the west coast of Nias, is blessed with some amazing surf and is home to the guests of Puri Asu. The main focus of the surf camp is the world class lefthander simply named Asu. This mechanical wave is very consistent, works on all tides and delivers on all swell sizes. It’s a wave for everyone and is the real lure for the majority of travelling surfers. Another 6-7 waves are found within less than 45 minutes from the resort.

Flights from Medan to Nias take just 50 minutes and conveniently fly each day.

Puri Asu Resort is ideal for all group sizes, families and couples looking for a slice of paradise on their surf vacation.

When staying at the resort last year we wrote a blog article about what you can expect.

You can read it here: The Real Guide to Surfing the Hinako Islands

Travelling to Hinakos

Guests need to fly into Medan Airport (KNO) - Kuala Namu International Airport West Sumatra

We recommend using https://www.skyscanner.net/ and flying into Jakarta, Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (CGK) or Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). From KL, there is usually one morning flight (1hr) with Air Asia as well as a lunchtime flight to Medan.  From Jakarta, there are plenty of flights each day that fly into Medan, with airlines such as Garuda Airlines, Sriwijaya, Citilink & Lion Air. We recommend https://www.nusatrip.com

From Medan, you will need to take an extra flight to Gunung Sitoli, Binaka Airport (GNS) we recommend Wings Air (part of Lion Air). There are a number of flights each day.

Note: Many of the air craft are small and have limited capacity to take surf boards. From our experience WINGS seems to have the best success rate with the majority of board bags making it across each flight. Worst case scenario your board bag will make it across the next day (although unlikely that this will happen).

From Gunung Sitoli, our driver will collect you & drive across Nias Island (2 hours of beautiful tropical scenery) to Sirombu Harbour. From here, our private speedboat will take you to Asu Island in about 30 minutes.

It’s a long but stress free journey and because there’s so many flights each day, you’ve plenty of travel options to suit your needs.
