Welcome to Ujung Bocur, the view from above (the "white arrow" points to Damai Bungalows)
Damai Bungalows is arguably the best camp in South Sumatra. Without question it’s the best value. Offering a spacious and relaxing atmosphere as well as mod cons like a bar, pool table & hammocks the surf camp provides 6 twin share bungalows that cater for up to 12 guests. Perfectly situated in front of Ujung Bocur, South Sumatra’s premier wave, guests can surf all day long as well as take in the breath taking views of the distant mountains or the palm fringed Sumatran coastline. New for 2016 is a swimming pool that overlooks Ujung Bocur, perfect for chilling out, checking the surf or enjoying a few sunset Bintangs.
Another reason why Damai should be your "go to" option is that as part of the daily rate, guests will have a complimentary surf guide each day. "Dedi" is a fun, energetic and an extremely experienced surf guide (and a well respected local surfer too). Its worth noting that none of the camps at Ujung Bocur offer complimentary surf guides and there's no one better than Dedi. He's also a great host and he offers optional "photo packages" for around $40-50 / trip.
Guests can arrive or depart anytime or any day. Local transport is also available at a small charge; to give you access to the regions other waves. Ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers – the camp is suited for any size groups including couples.
The Bungalows
8 x private rooms (6 standard and 2 superior)
“Standard” rooms include:
* Single beds (2-3 beds)
* Showers - no hot water, just cool fresh water from a deep bore, a perfect way to wash away the tropical heat
New (superior) rooms include:
* King bed (ideal for couples) – extra single mattress can be added
* Hot water shower
* Smart TV
All accommodation includes:
* Private indoor/outdoor bathrooms
* Rain showers set within river stones & indoor garden
* Air conditioning (or fans)
* Western flush toilets
* Basins with mirror & cupboard
* Power sockets
* Inner spring beds with all linen/pillows and mosquito nets
Each room is fully lockable & has its own veranda. Although safe, Damai Bungalows have 24-hour security patrolling the grounds to keep all your gear safe.
Standard bedroom each with private bathroom
Locally designed & built the 2 storey open air pavilion sits a stone’s throw from the beach. Sit and watch the waves roll by or grab a beer and enjoy those famous Indonesian sunsets as it sets directly in front of you. On the ground floor is the kitchen, river stone bar and jati dining tables whilst upstairs provides an elevated view of the waves and surrounding mountains.
Hearty meals are a huge part of any surf trip. Ayu is an amazing cook and personally ensures all of Damai’s meals are plentiful & varied each day.
Vegetarians and specific dietary requirements can be accommodated for with prior notice to your arrival.
Daily breakfast options usually include fried rice/noodles, eggs & toast, jaffles, omelettes, pancakes as well as juice, tea & coffee.
Lunch and dinner is focused on Indonesian dishes with fresh chicken, fish or beef curries, beef rendang & sate chicken as well as fresh veggies & rice. Western dishes include crumbed schnitzel, pasta, BBQ or fried chicken, pizza, sandwiches & oven baked veggies.

- 3 large, healthy delicious meals are served each day
- Unlimited Tea, Coffee and Water.
Not included in the price:
- Alcoholic beverages
- Soft drinks
- Additional snack bar menu
The perfect place to kick back after a long day surfing, the bar is fully equipped with pool table, table tennis and a Satellite TV so you never miss the big game.
The bar is also stocked with all soft drinks & a variety of beers. Fresh juices can also be made. Out of respect to local laws we don’t sell spirits but are happy to mix your duty free drinks for you.
We understand the importance of cold drinks and ensure we always have plenty, we have a large freezer and fridge stocked full for our guests and visitors.
Tea & coffee is also available.
There is also a small shop where you can purchase snacks like peanuts, chips, chocolate & ciggies. Basic toiletries are also available.
Facilities include:
- Billiards / Pool table

- Separate bar snack & drinks menu
All our camps in South Sumatra have complimentary surf guides to help you enjoy and discover this amazing region.
Daily transport isn’t included in the price but is always available on arrival.
The surf region stretches around 50 miles and is accessed by a long twisting road that takes about 1.5 hours to reach all the surf breaks.
Motor Bikes with surfboard rack are typically around $10 / day depending on availability and length of rental.
Car hire with driver is usually around $40 / day. But of course pricing can vary from driver to driver.
Please note fuel will be additional but is relatively cheap in the region.
This laid back corner of Indonesia hasnt been tarnished by development - unlike other parts of the country. You won't find any western influence here (away from the cluster of surf camps), instead just the raw daily life of the local community. This is how Indonesia should be experienced.
But that's not to say there aren't other points of interest away from the surf. We can easily arrange a number of short excursions to give you something extra than just a surfing experience, such as:
Visiting the local village of Krui
Pulau Pisang (banana island) – also has great surf!
Excursion to Lake Ranau the second largest lake on Sumatra
River boat trips
Jungle treks & elephant rides
Snorkelling & spear fishing
Just down from the camp are some sheltered reefs within walking distance for you to explore. We have some gear but best you bring your own.
Fishing
It's certainly possible to head out trolling or jigging in the local area. Typically we catch Spanish Mackerel, Tuna & Marlin when in season. GT's & Snapper can be jigged from the deeper reefs. Local style boats are available for hire for early morning or afternoon sessions. We do have some equipment however it’s best to bring your own. If packing fishing gear include your rod & reel, trolling lures, jigs, poppers, soft plastics etc.
Trip Information
Guests staying at Damai will appreciate that they have as good a view of Ujung Bocur as any other camp. Jason, the Australian owner, opened his doors over 10 years ago and so expect first rate knowledge to go along with his up beat banter.
As with all the camps in the region, as soon as you're checked in, you're free to surf! And when you're keen to explore the rest of the region, grab a motor bike from Jason (approx $5/day with rack) who together with his surf guide, will make sure you find what you're looking for.

Detailed information for all the surf breaks can be found in the destination's section of the site within the Krui, South Sumatra pages.

This is a fantastic place to stay, right in front of an awesome wave. It’s an amazing camp run by lovely people. They even built a swimming pool which is perfect for relaxing in between surfs. Dave from Surf Camp Sumatra co-ordinated the trip very well and made the trip really easy.

Just returned from a great surfing holiday in Sumatra. Damai Bungalows did not disappoint. We were looked after well, provided fantastic food & we could not complain about anything and by the way the surf wasn't too bad either.

Thanks Jas & Chooky for an awesome 12 days with you. Food was great and loved the flexible meal times for breakfast and lunch - allowed me to plan meals around surfing not the other way around. Great hosts, epic surf and definitely will return.
