Enjoy a totally unique & authentic experience at Umata Village's beachfront traditional Mentawaian long house.

The island (pulau Karangmajat) is home to just 2 other surf camps (Kandui Resort and Kandui Villas), the regions most reputable operations that also come at a premium rate. In fact the closest "home stay" (or any of the more affordable camps) is on Nyang Nyang island (close to E-bay) which is around 30 mins by speedboat to the North.

Umata Village located on Karangmajat Island and is walking distance to 4 amazing waves - Baby Kandui (tubing left), Kandui left (tubing left), Karambat left (easy left) & Four Bobs (fun right) with a total of 8 waves surrounding this incredible island (the other waves require a short speedboat ride). And whats more, there are around 20 world class waves within a 30-40 minute boat ride.

The camp is locally owned and run by Yan and his daughter Sitta. Yan is a Siberut anthropologist and can tell you the most exciting stories of the Mentawaian culture and area. Sitta loves taking guests on a tour of the island to collect local produce and teach guests about the local island life. Whats more is that there are several snorkelling spots nearby and a few of the best fishing spots in the Mentawai Islands!

For those opting for one of the daily speedboat options, Yan and Sitta only use the most experienced local boat operators and surf guides who will be sure to take you to the regions best waves.

Guests can to travel to Umata Village from Padang 3 days a week with trips starting & ending in Padang every Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday. Minimum stay 7 nights (8 days).

Accommodation

In 2009 Umata Village built a traditional longhouse (‘Uma’) that is inspired by Mentawai’s most magnificent technical creation built by medicine men in the Siberut jungle. In 2019 the Uma was renovated and a new floor was placed. In addition, 4 rooms were built in the back of the Uma; 3 twin rooms and 1 double room.

All rooms are equipped with a fan, mosquito net, a small table, electric plugs and some storage space. All linen is provided. Shared bathrooms are available outside of the Uma. Guests can relax at the table with chairs in the middle or on the traditional couches in front of the Uma.

Umata Village serves three healthy meals per day as part of the package. Their local cook knows how to feed hungry surfers with her mixture of Western and local dishes with a focus on local produce and freshly caught seafood. Furthermore, Yan loves to drink tea or coffee and eat cookies with you!

Umata Village’s guests can pre-book daily private speedboats. There is an option for a small boat for 1-4 people and a large boat for up to 8 guests. All boats come with a boat operator who knows all the surf spots well, although they are not necessarily surfers themselves.

There are two options to choose from:

• Whole day surfing local Kandui waves, including Rifles, 4 bobs, Baby Kandui, Kandui, Pistols, Playgrounds left/right (Karambat) and A-frames .
• Whole day surfing all of the areas waves (20+ waves) including E-Bay, Hideaways, Pitstops, Beng Beng, Bank Vaults, Nipussi and Burgerworld etc

Pricing "per day" (no half days).

Small boat - max 4 guests

• Whole day (local Kandui waves) with one engine 80 EUR (approx USD 88 / AUD 135)
• Whole day (all waves) with one engine 135 EUR (approx USD 148/ AUD 225)

Large boat max 8 guests

You will be able to surf the whole day from dawn till dusk. Typically 2 trips per day & only one trip to Siberut & North coast of Nyang Nyang - waves like E-bay, Nipussi, Pitstops, Eret, Good Times, Beng Bengs etc. If wanting to surf those waves all day, a packed lunch will be provided so you can stay in the region for the whole day if required.

Note: Guests will have a "half" surf day at the start of their trip as well as a half day the end of their trip. For example, a 7 night / 8 day trip will have 6 full days and 2 half days to surf.

Expect nothing less than a life changing surf adventure & a totally authentic experience. In years gone by, only those paying premium rates when staying at Kandui Resort or Kandui Villas would have "direct" access to the 8 waves that surround Kandui Island (Karangmajat). Umata Village is nestled perfectly between these 2 surf camps and apart from a few speedboats going by, you'll feel like you have the whole island to yourself.

Its also worth noting that 95% of the regions other camps are located at least 30 minutes away by speedboat (mainly on Nyang Nyang).

The Surf

Rifles - Arguably the best right hand tube in Indonesia although very fickle

Pistols - Tubing right (requires smaller swells)
Malibu right - fun, short, easy right

The other 15 or so waves are within a 30 minute speedboat ride.

Travelling to Sumatra

Guests need to fly into Padang Airport, West Sumatra 

We recommend using https://www.skyscanner.net/ and flying into either Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - or Jakarta, Indonesia.  From KL, there is usually one morning flight (1hr) with Air Asia  as well as a lunchtime flight to Padang.  From Jakarta, there are over a dozen flights each day that fly into Padang, from airlines such as Garuda Airlines, Srwijaya, Citilink  & Lion Air. Transfers: Padang to Umata Village

All guests will need to spend their first night and last night in Padang due to the Mentawai Fast Ferry schedule between Padang and the Mentawai Islands.  Transport from Padang airport to the main hotel district takes around 1 hour and about 5-10 mins from the hotel district to the fast ferry port. The ferry departs Padang early morning, 3 days a week (to Siberut, mentawai) before returning back in the afternoon & arriving into Padang around 6:30pm.

Mentawai Fast Ferry

The safest, most reliable way of travelling between the mainland and the Mentawai islands. Full details: www.mentawaifast.com

From the hotel district, the ferry port is about a 10 minute taxi ride.

Travel days from Padang to Siberut are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. We suggest Saturday to Tuesday as a standard trip. But for example, guests can also do 7 or 14 days (Tues-Tues, Sat-Sat) or 11 days (Tues-Sat).

The overall travel time is detailed below (crossing time 3-6 hrs)

You'll need to overnight on your first night in Padang (Mon, Weds or Fri) and your last night in Padang (Tues, Thurs or Sat).

PADANG TO MENTAWAI (SIBERUT)

Note: Thursday is the best day to arrive in the Mentawai!

Tuesday: FAST FERRY, departs 7am, arrives Mentawai same day around 12.30/13.00.
Thursday: FAST FERRY, departs 7am, arrives Mentawai same day around 10/10.30am

2 hour Mentawai Speedboat transfer (From Siberut ferry port, Mentawai Islands to Umata Village)

When taking the fast ferry from Padang to the Mentawai Islands, guests will require a further speedboat to reach Karangmajat Island where Umata Village is located.

• Siberut - 100 EUR (approx. USD 110 / AUD 165), one way, per boat of up to 4 guests (1 engine)
• Siberut - 145 EUR (approx. USD 158/ AUD 242), one way, per boat of up to 8 guests (2 engines)

Deposit & Payment

A 30% deposit is required to secure your booking. Initial deposit is non-refundable but transferable or exchanged with a friend to take your place on that specific date (passengers are responsible for finding their own replacements).

Balance of payment is due no later than 60 days prior to your arrival and is 100% non-refundable.

One payment per group for initial deposit & a second payment per group for the final balance (60 days prior to arrival).

Guests have 3 ways to make a payment:

1) Bank Transfer

Bank transfer is the most common form of payment. Payments can be made to our Australian, US, Euro, New Zealand or Pound Sterling accounts. On confirmation of booking we will send you the details.

2) Credit Card

Credit Card payments are accepted with a 2.9% fee.

3) PayPal

PayPal payments are available and are subject to a % surcharge from PayPal. These fees are typically around 4% (TBC).

Expect nothing less than a life changing surf adventure & a totally authentic experience. In years gone by, only those paying premium rates when staying at Kandui Resort or Kandui Villas would have "direct" access to the 8 waves that surround Kandui Island (Karangmajat). Umata Village is nestled perfectly between these 2 surf camps and apart from a few speedboats going by, you'll feel like you have the whole island to yourself.

Its also worth noting that 95% of the regions other camps are located at least 30 minutes away by speedboat (mainly on Nyang Nyang).

Rifles - Arguably the best right hand tube in Indonesia although very fickle
A-Frames (aka John Candy's) - Tubing lefts and rights
Pistols - Tubing right (requires smaller swells)
Malibu right - fun, short, easy right

The other 15 or so waves are within a 30 minute speedboat ride.

Guests need to fly into Padang Airport, West Sumatra 

We recommend using https://www.skyscanner.net/ and flying into either Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - or Jakarta, Indonesia.  From KL, there is usually one morning flight (1hr) with Air Asia  as well as a lunchtime flight to Padang.  From Jakarta, there are over a dozen flights each day that fly into Padang, from airlines such as Garuda Airlines, Srwijaya, Citilink  & Lion Air. Transfers: Padang to Umata Village

All guests will need to spend their first night and last night in Padang due to the Mentawai Fast Ferry schedule between Padang and the Mentawai Islands.  Transport from Padang airport to the main hotel district takes around 1 hour and about 5-10 mins from the hotel district to the fast ferry port. The ferry departs Padang early morning, 3 days a week (to Siberut, mentawai) before returning back in the afternoon & arriving into Padang around 6:30pm.

Mentawai Fast Ferry

The safest, most reliable way of travelling between the mainland and the Mentawai islands. Full details: www.mentawaifast.com

From the hotel district, the ferry port is about a 10 minute taxi ride.

Travel days from Padang to Siberut are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. We suggest Saturday to Tuesday as a standard trip. But for example, guests can also do 7 or 14 days (Tues-Tues, Sat-Sat) or 11 days (Tues-Sat).

The overall travel time is detailed below (crossing time 3-6 hrs)

You'll need to overnight on your first night in Padang (Mon, Weds or Fri) and your last night in Padang (Tues, Thurs or Sat).

PADANG TO MENTAWAI (SIBERUT)

Note: Thursday is the best day to arrive in the Mentawai!

Tuesday: FAST FERRY, departs 7am, arrives Mentawai same day around 12.30/13.00.
Thursday: FAST FERRY, departs 7am, arrives Mentawai same day around 10/10.30am

MENTAWAI (SIBERUT) TO PADANG

2 hour Mentawai Speedboat transfer (From Siberut ferry port, Mentawai Islands to Umata Village)

When taking the fast ferry from Padang to the Mentawai Islands, guests will require a further speedboat to reach Karangmajat Island where Umata Village is located.

• Siberut - 100 EUR (approx. USD 110 / AUD 165), one way, per boat of up to 4 guests (1 engine)
• Siberut - 145 EUR (approx. USD 158/ AUD 242), one way, per boat of up to 8 guests (2 engines)

Alternatively, guests can be collected/dropped off at the following locations;

• Tua Pejat - 250 EUR, one way, per boat of up to 8 guests (2 engines)
• Katiet (HT's) - 430 EUR, one way, per boat of up to 8 guests (2 engines)

Note: it is also possible to pick up guests from Nyang-Nyang or Pei-Pei

Make sure you to pack light & within the baggage restrictions of your airline. 

Don’t leave for your trip without any of the following:

A 30% deposit is required to secure your booking. Initial deposit is non-refundable but transferable or exchanged with a friend to take your place on that specific date (passengers are responsible for finding their own replacements).

Balance of payment is due no later than 60 days prior to your arrival and is 100% non-refundable.

One payment per group for initial deposit & a second payment per group for the final balance (60 days prior to arrival).

Guests have 3 ways to make a payment:

1) Bank Transfer

Bank transfer is the most common form of payment. Payments can be made to our Australian, US, Euro, New Zealand or Pound Sterling accounts. On confirmation of booking we will send you the details.

2) Credit Card

Credit Card payments are accepted with a 2.9% fee.

3) PayPal

PayPal payments are available and are subject to a % surcharge from PayPal. These fees are typically around 4% (TBC).

Travel Insurance is mandatory for your safety and no guest will be able to depart on any trip unless they have copies of their travel insurance documents before departure. We advise all guests take out insurance upon booking in case of accident or personal problems prior to your trip.
