Trip Information
The “many” islands, lie off the west coast of Northern Sumatra, nestled between the island of Nias to the south and south east of Simeulue, to the North. These sparsely inhabited islands are home to world class waves including “Treasure Island” as well as a wave dense cluster of breaks, found in the “Bay of Plenty”. And in similar fashion to its neighbouring archipelagos, perfect waves break on its shores with extreme frequency. Located just above the equator, winds are generally light year round.
The best time of year to surf “The Banyaks” is during the dry season, which can be anytime from April to October, when the Indian Ocean produces its most consistent groundswells. That said, "off season" trips (November-March) are becoming more popular with the promise of completely empty line-ups.
Detailed information for all the surf breaks can be found in the Banyak Islands destination's section of the site:
* Surf Breaks - Banyak Islands
Guests need to fly into Sibolga Airport (FLZ), North Sumatra
Guests will then be taken by taxi to the port. The taxi & meet and greet is included in your package.
The boat departs at 6-7pm.
Flights
We recommend using www.skyscanner.net and flying into either Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - or Jakarta, Indonesia (recommended). From either of these destinations, you'll then need to take a further flight to Medan.
From Medan you will need to take a short flight to Sibolga (FLZ). There is usually just one flight each day (each way) from Medan with Wings Air. This can be booked on www.traveloka.com
We advise guests to spend the first and last night of the trip in Medan (Horizon Hotel). This is because it can be common for boardbags to get left behind due to space limitations onboard the flight. This way, boards can be transported across land (10 hrs) from Medan to Sibolga, safely to the boat (& back to Medan again!).
Note: Domestic and international flights can also be booked via Boraspati Travel email [email protected]
In all cases, please run your itinerary by us before you book just to make sure!
COMMUNICATION:
There is no cellphone coverage in most places in the Banyaks. In case of emergency, the Satellite phone number for the Seriti is +870776140216 – if anyone at home needs to reach you urgently they can also send a brief message via email: [email protected] (Less than 120 characters).
If you need to get a local SIM card, the Telkomsel network has intermittent coverage at Bay of Plenty, you can also use your phone’s roaming when the Seriti is in that area.
Depart harbour 6-7pm from Sibolga, arrive Banyak Islands early the next morning.
10 days surfing / 11 nights on board
Return back to Sibolga early morning.
One of the ground staff will take you to the airport in Sibolga where you fly back to Medan.
Guests Are advised to spend the night in Medan (fly out the next morning).
Note: The trip has no fixed route as the surf conditions can change day to day. The experienced crew are always aware of the swell forecast and will update everybody each day to discuss the next move. The captain will usually change location during the night, leaving the opportunity for the guests to enjoy the vast majority of the day surfing.
Before booking a trip aboard Seriti, make sure to check our "Know before you go" section which is a handy page of what to expect as well as a detailed inventory of what to bring.

Amazing trip to the Banyaks. The Seriti has plenty of space, totally comfortable, great food and always a cold beer on hand. The skipper certainly delivered the goods. We all scored the waves of our lives. Lovely crew, always with a big smile on their faces! Outstanding in every way...we'll be back.
