Trip Information

The Banyak Islands, meaning “many islands,” sit off the west coast of Northern Sumatra, between Nias to the south and Simeulue to the north. Sparsely populated and rich in natural beauty, these islands are home to world-class waves such as Treasure Island and the wave-packed Bay of Plenty. Like their neighbouring archipelagos, the Banyaks receive a steady stream of flawless surf, breaking with impressive consistency. Sitting just above the equator, the region enjoys generally light winds year round.
Guests also have the option to explore the Telo Islands instead of the Banyaks. The final call between these two zones can be made just a few days before departure, after consulting with Chris (surf guide) and checking the latest forecast.
The dry season, from late March through early November, delivers the most reliable surf, as the Indian Ocean sends a constant run of groundswell, with the biggest pulses usually arriving between May and September.
Overall, this region best suits intermediate to advanced surfers, who will truly appreciate the rewards after the long journey. While the islands offer plenty of dreamy setups, most waves break over sharp coral reefs ready to serve a reminder if you are caught off guard, so we do not recommend the area for learners or early-stage beginners.
That said, with such a variety of breaks, confident intermediates can still score the waves of their lives without too much risk. And for advanced riders, one trip here is rarely the last.
Detailed information for all the surf breaks can be found in the Banyak & Telo Islands destination's section of the site:
* Surf Breaks - Banyak Islands
* Surf Breaks - Telo Islands

Guests need to fly into Sibolga Airport (FLZ), Northern Sumatra, via to Medan. To reach Medan guests typically fly to Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta or Singapore first.
With this route, we'd need to transport the board bags by land (Medan>Sibolga>Medan) and you should factor in 12hrs for the transport. That means you’d arrive the day before departure into Medan, you'd get picked up, stay at a hotel (guests typically stay at “Anara sky kualanamu” or Crew”) and the boards get transported to Sibolga over land as the flight (with Wings Air) doesn't always take them.
The next day you'd take the morning flight to Sibolga. On the way out, you’d also have to stay a night in Medan or not fly out before 9pm as otherwise the last surf day gets cut short to accommodate the board transfer by land (which takes 12hrs).
For flights we recommend using (international flights): http://www.kayak.com as well as (domestic flights): http://www.traveloka.com/
Transfer package (Medan to Sibolga to Medan) – “optional” - note that 95% of guests do take this option
For your convenience we are pleased to offer a package for USD 150 (approx. AUD 230) per person, each way.
Includes:
- Meet and greet in Medan
- All taxis Medan
- 1 night each way at the Anara Sky Kualanamu or Cambridge hotel (Medan)
- Flights Medan-Sibolga and Sibolga-Medan
- Meet and greet in Sibolga
- All taxis Sibolga
- Overland board bag transfer (Medan>Sibolga>Medan)
Note: Domestic and international flights can also be booked via Boraspati Travel email info@boraspati.com

Louis, Newcastle
The Dream provided a Epic Trip with amazing waves, barrels and great food. Pierre, the captain was on point with finding the best waves possible. The boat had everything we needed, plenty of space and a great crew. I highly recommend booking a trip with the Dream. I will be coming back for sure! Louis Newcastle, Australia
Todd, Bronte
Louis is the guy who booked the trip. I'm Todd. Lord of the mac. Trevor is the sickest c**t I've met. Trevor and his island of goodies, more than satisfied this deviants needs of addiction. If we were in Byron his name would be Lord Trevor. Lamb of Trevor. And he would take away the sins of your pull backs. Have mercy on you. The sun was shining and the weather was sweet and I want Saint Pierre to know he is an Angel too. He's an angle too. Todd 11 stars out of 6. Bronte Reef, Sydney

Thanks to Pierre for a solid trip. Scored some epic and uncrowded waves, big thanks to the crew too who were top notch, yeew

Superb boat. The Dream is literally a dream, plenty of space, full of mod cons and always a cold beer on hand. The skipper certainly delivered the goods. We all scored the waves of our lives. Great crew, always with a big smile on their faces! The crew are seasoned Indo's and really know what they are doing! Outstanding in every way.
