You'll be in the hands of a very experienced team...
Skipper - Captain Jai: Jai has long history of driving and working on boats in local waters and across Indonesia. He took over long time captain Oyon when he retired and has filled his shoes perfectly. For many years before joining us on the Naga Laut he worked the Indonesian seas on cargo boats long before any surf charter boats were around. He then joined the surf charter industry when waves were first being explored so has a wealth of knowledge of every nook and cranny of the Sumatran waters.
Machine Room - Nasrun: Nasrun has worked on boats for years. Padang born and bred and grew up alongside the beach close to where the Naga Laut departs. He is the least visible crew member as he will often be tinkering out of the sight in the engine room.
Surf Guide - Margi: Margi is a local Mentawaian and one of the most experienced surf guides in the Mentawai Islands. In the 90's he was already there discovering surf spots with the pioneers of the Mentawai. Margi loves the ocean and surfing. And as he also wants to sneak a few perfect uncrowded waves for himself, he does a great job as surf guide as he really knows the conditions and is able to get you to the right places at the right times with low crowds.
Cook - Boy: At the end of 2003, Naga Laut were fortunate to have Boy join the boat. He is an adaptable and dexterous cook and you can expect to be served meals ranging from fresh baked focaccia to roast lamb dinner to a full Chinese spread. He does a great job producing a variety of meals to suit varied tastes. After dinner however, you will often find Boy and the rest of the crew sitting on the back deck concentrating seriously in a fishing contest.
Boatman, Deckhand - Pardi: The ever-smiling and joking Pardi is always on standby to drop you on the peak and ready to give you a ride back to Naga Laut when you are done surfing.
Photographer - Anton: That magic wave, deep barrel, big fish or sunset Bintangs on the boat will all be captured by the ever-ready, trigger-happy Anton. He also runs the show in the saloon to make sure everything is always neat and clean, and makes sure the fridge is always stocked full of icy cold Bintangs.
I also asked the Aussie owner (Frank) how often he surf guided himself and this is was his reply...
Personally, I only do around one third of the trips.
This is mainly its just to monitor how things are going and I always walk away with the utmost confidence in how my crew run the ship. As all of my crew all love to talk and are all very humble, they make everyone feel super comfortable from the moment they board. Especially my photographer and surf guide. Actually, after each trip, one thing that almost all of my guests say is that they love having an all local crew, as they have felt on other trips of theirs on other boats, that some western workers can get a little arrogant. This is one reason that I do not like to do too many myself. Not that I am arrogant in any way, but I just want our guests to feel as though THEY own the boat for the duration of their trip.
Trip Information
When booking a trip aboard the Naga Laut, guests will have the chance to surf either the Mentawai Islands (the whole region) – or further north to the Telo Islands (as well as parts of the Northern Mentawai). If you’re booking a large group then you’ll usually get to choose which region. Smaller groups and single surfers should enquire as to which region the charter will be heading to.
Both regions offer a nice mix of waves, so it’s best to check out our destinations pages where you'll find detailed descriptions of all the surf breaks to get an idea of which region you’d prefer to visit.
* Surf Breaks - Mentawai (Playgrounds)
* Surf Breaks - Telo Islands

The Naga Laut has got to be one of the best boat trips going in the Mentawais. Aussie owner Frank and his Indo crew are an epic bunch, most notably Boy the killer chef, Anton the deckhand and Alawa the dingy guy are all completely at the top of their game and a pleasure to be around All of them work incredibly hard to make sure everything runs smoothly, are well fed and you get the best waves. I've done three trips with this crew and look forward to going back soon and would never consider going on any other charter. The Naga Laut is comfortable, clean and a super solid boat and under the guidance of Yanto and his brother Didit the surf guides, good local surfers who knows the spots like the back of their hands, I have always felt that on any given day we were getting the best waves on offer in the Mentawais, including a number of absolutely perfect sessions with just our boat around. Five stars all the way. Just epic, every time.

Had such a great time on the Naga Laut super comfy boat plenty of space and the crew are stellar! It was like having 7 extra mates on the boat. Didit the surf guide nailed it on the spots to surf we had lances left for a whole day to ourselves in peak season in perfect off shore 6/7ft unheard of !!. Boy the cook didn't cook the same thing twice and everything was delish ! can't wait to get back to the ments and I will be on the Naga Laut for sure.

We surfed our brains out 3 times a day enjoying the beautiful waters of the Mentawai. We had some great sessions at HT's, Thunders, Maccas and Scarecrows. Near the end of the trip we went to Burgerworld, a picturesque break which offers fun barrels and endless walls to play on. The fun never stopped. Much thanks for the great times.

So this was my second trip on the famous Naga Laut, once again stoked! 5 mates aboard late season surfed different waves every day. Cheers to Franko, the crew and lads.
