The Maki is a 105' "Phinisi" style sail boat built in 2017 in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Although she is relatively new in the region, the owner/operators have clocked up an impressive amount of time in Indonesia, specifically in the Mentawai Islands.
Maki is ideal for those wanting more of a luxury trip to the Mentawai Islands, yet at a very affordable price. She's a big girl & comes complete with all the bells and whistles you'd expect, including; sea kayaks, stand up paddle boards, 3 decks, 5 cabins (3 with private bathrooms), fishing & snorkelling gear as well as a speedboat and a dingy to shuttle you to the waves all day, every day. Maki even has a Yamaha Wave Runner (Jet ski) upon request, for an extra cost.
Most trips are focused on the Mentawais, but a handful of trips each year head further north to the Telo Islands & beyond.

Stern Shaded Deck (1 of 3 decks)
At 105 feet, space certainly isn't a problem. In fact, Maki can technically accommodate 17 guests, but for optimum comfort levels and privacy, there is a limit for each trip of no more than 11 guests.
Maki boasts a spacious living room with 2 dining tables, open plan kitchen and TV, an external lounge to hang out and watch the surf, a sun deck with 8 day beds, and 5 cabins - 3 of them being en-suites.
Exterior space includes 3 large decks. The upper deck is the perfect "sunset" spot, the shaded back deck offers midday sun protection and there's a lower front deck too to stretch out or to find a quiet corner to yourself.
Accommodation includes:
- Fully air conditioned interior and guest cabins
- 5 guest cabins, 3 with ensuite bathroom (comfortably sleeping 11 guests):
- 6 toilets
- 6 showers (+2 outdoor showers)
- 3 x exterior deck areas (8 sun beds on upper deck)
- Big indoor living room with 2 dining tables with flat screen TV
- Powerful Bluetooth speakers
- Large shaded board room dedicated to accommodate your boards, with direct access to the dinghy
The 5 sleeping cabins offer plenty of privacy and are detailed below;
Master Ensuite (above)
The Master Ensuite features a queen sized bed, a table, a side couch and its own bathroom. Located on the stern of the vessel in the mid level, it offers a 270° view to the waves. It is the ultimate room for a couple or a young family seeking the best possible Mentawai experience.
Room 1 (above)
Room 1 is a 5 person dorm with its own toilet. Located in the bottom level at the bow, it is the most basic room option, but still comfortable for a boat. Perfect for groups of friends who don’t mind sharing a space and having a laugh at night laying in bed, surfed out.
Room 2 (above)
Room 2 features a double bed with a bunk single bed above it. It is located in the bottom level, close to the center of gravity. It doesn’t have a private bathroom but there is a bathroom next to the cabin. It suits couples or friends traveling together.
Room 3 (above)
Room 3 has a double bed with a single bed above it. Besides its own bathroom, it also has more space than room 2 and a small desk with a mirror. Located at the bottom of the boat, next to room 2.
Room 4 (above)
Room 4 also has a private en-suite bathroom as well as a double bed and a single bed above it. Located at the top level behind the captain's cabin. Definitely one of the best rooms.
There is also a small air conditioned room for the photographer and a large room at the stern dedicated to your surfboards so they don't get any sun. It also makes it easy for you to grab the one you want and jump onto the dinghy via the backdoor to the outboard sea level platform.

Flights
We recommend using www.skyscanner.com and flying into either Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - or Jakarta, Indonesia. From KL, there is usually one morning flight (1hr) with Air Asia as well as a lunchtime flight to Padang. From Jakarta, there are over a dozen flights each day that fly into Padang, from airlines such as Garuda Airlines, Srwijaya, Citilink & Lion Air. We always recommend flying with Garuda & booking via www.nusatrip.com
Note: Visa On Arrival: A FREE 30 day Visa On Arrival is now available for a number of countries including: Australia, USA, Brazil, South Africa, New Zealand, Canada, Peru, Costa Rica, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Ireland, England, France, Switzerland, Sweden and Germany.

Return back to Padang early morning on the last day of your trip.

Fly anytime after 12 pm (although earlier departures are also possible).
Note: The trip has no fixed route as the surf conditions can change day to day. Pete Owens
Main season 2019. Everything was first class. Crew were diligent & were happy to look after all our needs. Ian, the surf guide, was professional and extremely knowedgable. He knew the region well and managed to find us uncrowded waves most days. Overall super stoked, these guys have lots of enthusiasm & the boat itself is amazing!
