Probably the most remote of any camp in the entire region - Maonu is located on the west coast of Siberut and offers a completely unique experience. At first glance of its geographical location, any would be traveller could easily mistake this camp for being a little far from the surf action. In fact, the island has 3 amazing waves on the outer reefs. With the right swell and wind conditions there are 7 waves that are surfable, including some that are on a world class level. The camp is secluded from all the other resorts in fact the only other people around will be the local coconut harvesters or local fisherman. The waves out front are usually really quiet, so solo surfs are a common thing.
Guests can to travel to the camp from Padang 3 days a week with trips starting & ending in Padang every Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday
Catering for up to 9 guests, the camp is an extremely comfortable and affordable option for surfers of all abilities - and those looking to avoid the crowds of the other camps.
The Maonu main house is the social area of the camp where meals are served and stories are shared. The camp also has 3 bungalows, each with its own shower area & share a toilet.
Each of the 3 buildings are widely spaced apart, allowing for maximum privacy between the bungalows. Each bungalow is approximately 15 metres away from the beach, nestled back in amongst the coconut tree forest. The beach itself is exceptional with some of the clearest waters you’ll experience in the Mentawai Islands.
1 x Private bungalow (1-2 guests)
1 x Shared bungalow (5 guests)
1 x Private “Villa” bungalow (1-2 guests)
New for 2017 is the Villa Bungalow. This includes; private entrance to the beach, private bathroom with shower, small lounge/ seating area inside the villa, kitchenette with gas stove for cooking or boiling water, making tea & coffee. It also is more secluded from the main camp area & has wifi available (otherwise wifi is only available in the main umma/ dinning and recreational area).
Fans in all the rooms will keep you cool & there are mosquito nets to keep you bite-free during the night. Tables and shelves offer you some storage. Both downstairs and upstairs balconies in the main house are prime spots to relax during the evenings thanks to comfy seating & a mellow and welcoming vibe.
The camps electricity is powered by our own generators. At night, the generators will run until midnight at which time the air is much cooler & fans aren’t needed.
There is no phone signal but the camp does have internet facilities that are available each evening for about 5 hours. Although fine for general web browsing, emails and phone calls – the camp asks each guest to limit their use. Downloading & streaming isn’t available.

A typical day at the camp would be as follows:
- Wake up at whatever time you want
- If you're not frothing too hard then we have breakfast at the camp with some tea or a coconut. We then head out to find some waves.
- For the frothers we can have breakfast ready to go and we eat on the boat.
- If there are waves on or near the island then we will surf until you’re tired and then head back to camp for lunch and a chill, then head back out for a surf when the batteries are recharged.
- If we are heading to the outer islands in the morning, we will leave early morning and have lunch on the boat or in one of the local villages. We will then head back out for a surf.
- 6 pm we head back to the camp for some cold sunset beers and a feast.
- Our mission is to find the best possible waves for our guests each day.
- Plenty of opportunity to spear or fish along the way between surfs.
