Mentawai Surf Report, June 2018
by Kuda Laut Charter Boat
Surf Report: 5 - 16 June 2018
Weather: 10 days of perfect weather with clear sunny skies and one rainy day which brought to life a fickle right hand barreling wave in the southern mentawais.
Swell: Starting the trip the forecast was nothing to get excited about for mid season mentawais. No major swells were forecast and mostly small conditions for the first week with a slight improvement for the remaining days.
Differing S and SSW swells also opened up a few more options if you could manage to strike it right.
The swell was favouring the central part of the mentawais most of the trip but small days forced us to head south to seek more exposed areas to the swell on offer. It was a tricky forecast with many variables but the surf guide did a fantastic job getting the lads on the waves of their lives.
Winds: Predominately trades as expected for mid june, with a few days of afternoon SW winds. We were also fortunate enough to get a couple of days of North wind opening some heavy barrels in the southern areas.
Sessions: Many sessions to remember and many a big barrel we had in the picturesque turquoise blue water.
Straight into the trip the guys were treated with perfect scarecrows on the first day. Moving to Lances lefts and getting it as dreamy as she gets in the mid size 4ft range. After making the call to head south the boys got dropped into perfect 5-6ft rags right with only a handful of guys in the water it was a standout session of the trip. The following day was solid waves at greenbush which was a memorable session with the boys giving it everything they had. Thunders and bat caves were also surfed adding to all the great sessions. The trip ended with the last couple of days at HTs with the building swell it was perfect.
Crowds: The big name spots had a fair crowd on it especially heading into the mid part of the season, however most sessions were surfed with a minimal crowd in the southern areas and a bit of gambling paid off this time.
Catch of the day
A few solid ones down south
For an average forecast the guests still scored some truly epic waves
After thoughts: Surprisingly that with a supposed "average" forecast the waves really delivered and the crew were treated to possibly the best waves of their lives. Definitely a stoked bunch of guests once again! Check back soon for our next report.
