North Sipora, Mentawai Surf Report, April 2018
by Aloita Resort
Weather: Much like the rest of the Mentawai region, the weather through April was largely calm and storm free with plenty of sunny days and light winds.
Swell: We have seen very good mid range days at almost every spot. Mid sized and small S and SW swells has been lighting up spots all over the area and keep smiles shinning all over the place for visitors and locals alike. Seems that the season is kicking in on a high note this year.
Off shore days: Very good E and SE trade winds conditions have kicked in already and the whole area has been showcasing some nice classic Indo conditions.
Best sessions: We had one of the biggest swells of the last five years in late April and that one created some of the best Telescopes sessions ever seen. Plenty of double and even triple overhead sessions with very few takers on the outside on the biggest days. It was a good chance for the chargers to test themselves on some real Indian ocean power. Scarecrows had some epic surf as well. Iceland reached 20 foot and no one dared to paddle out. Tikus, our relatively small and friendly spot was deliverying beautiful 6 - 8 foot faces. Waves were breaking in places they rarely break and that big Sunday was a day to remember. Also we had a couple of beautiful late sessions at Iceland and Ombak Tidur and even Suicides has been doing its thing during a couple of perfect early morning high tide sessions. More rare spots like Seven Palms and Twiggys delivered very nice uncrowded sessions every now and then too.
Crowd: Not crowded at all except a few sessions at Telescopes but still the crowd was manageable.

Icelands was like this a lot in April

Suicides, as the name would suggest, produced some pretty hollow conditions
Its not always about the lefts in this region, some of the rights had their day too
After thoughts: The early part of April delivered some small but fun waves but by the 2nd half of April conditions began to really fire with some incredible days and picture perfect conditions. The forecast for May is looking excellent with plenty of activity in the Indian Ocean (see the swell model below).
